Compass Testing[ ACT Home Page ]

What is the COMPASS test?
The American College Testing (ACT) developed the COMPASS test to help applicants succeed in their educational goals.  COMPASS is a computerized placement test that measures skills in Reading, English and Mathematics.  The main purpose of the skills assessment is to help identify your current strengths and needs so you may build a solid plan for success in the educational options you choose to pursue at Gateway Community and Technical College.

Who must take the COMPASS?
Students enrolling in Gateway for the purpose of earning a credential (a certificate, diploma, or associate degree) must demonstrate through the ACT or COMPASS that they possess the minimum academic skills essential for success.  The COMPASS is required of all applicants who do not score an 18 or higher on the ACT in Reading, English and Mathematics.  If you have never taken the ACT, the COMPASS will be used for placement.  Transfer students who have not completed a freshman English, a transferable Mathematics course, and a Reading based course such as Psychology, Sociology, or Literature must take the COMPASS.

How much does it cost to take the COMPASS?
There is no charge for students taking the COMPASS test for the first time.  If you choose to retest, there is a fee of $7.00 for a one-time opportunity to retest.

Will my COMPASS score keep me from attending Gateway?
The COMPASS is a placement test.  Your scores help you and your advisor select the courses you need to be successful.  Based on the COMPASS scores, a student may be placed in developmental courses or in the case of a Reading score of 43 or lower, a student will be guided to other resources to elevate their academic readiness for college courses.

How do I sign-up for the COMPASS test?

COMPASS testing is available by appointment only.  You can schedule to take the COMPASS by calling 859-442-4115.

Should I bring anything with me when I take the test?
Students must show a valid photo ID at the time of testing.  Tester may bring a calculator for the mathematics section, but not a graphing calculator.  Cell phones are not permitted in the testing room.

How soon will I know the results of my COMPASS test?

The COMPASS will automatically print your results when you have completed the test.  You will be given a copy of your results.  Your scores will be available to your advisor when you meet with them during your advising session. A sample COMPASS test may be found on the following websites:
