Cosmetologists provide hair, scalp, facial, nail and other personal care services. They work as hairstylists, manicurists, makeup artists and more.
Gateway provides 1,800 clock hours of training in professional, personal-care services. Along with classroom theory, students receive hands-on experience in the lab. Students attend 450 clock hours of training for each of four semesters. During the first two semesters, classes occur Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In the last two semesters, classes take place Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 9 p.m.
Gateway’s Cosmetology program is approved by the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists (KBHC). After successfully completing the program, graduates are prepared to take the Apprentice Cosmetology Examination. Program graduates are eligible to take required KBHC examinations for licensure after they meet the following criteria:

Admissions to the Cosmetology Program
Cosmetology is a very popular program, and there is usually a waiting list for admission. Additional admissions requirements apply. Applicants must provide high school transcripts with date of graduation, a copy of the high school diploma, an official GED score report with passing scores, or documented proof of 10th grade education. Applicants must also supply transcripts of all postsecondary education or training and submit qualified ACT or COMPASS test scores. When all admissions requirements are met, applicants will be placed on the waiting list for the program.
An Associate of Applied Science degree is available through General Occupational/Technical Studies.
