AA and AS degrees are designed to enable you to transfer to bachelor’s degree program at universities. Why begin at Gateway?
-
Our tuition rate is roughly half the cost of tuition at any public university in Kentucky – and sometimes less than half the cost. Completing two years at Gateway can save you thousands of dollars in tuition.
-
You receive the individual attention you deserve because class sizes are usually smaller than those of public universities, even in entry level courses.
-
Teaching is the top priority. Our faculty is focused on you and your educational goals.
-
Our transfer students have high success rates. Students who start their educational careers at a community and technical college perform as well or better than students who start at a four-year college or university.

General Education Transfer Policy
There are three levels of transfer certification: category, core and fully general education certified. All courses transferred are subject to minimum grade requirements according to institutional requirements for native students. Institutions that require a greater number of total hours of general education may require transferring students to take additional hours at their institution.
Category Certification
Students who have completed only some areas in the 33-credit-hour core transfer component will be certified on an area-by-area basis. Students with “area” certification and/or additional coursework still must fulfill all the remaining general education requirements for the receiving university’s bachelor’s degree program. Category areas include writing/accessing information, oral communication, heritage, humanities, social interaction, science, mathematics and computer literacy.
Core Certification
Students who have completed all five specified subject areas in the 33-credit-hour core transfer component will be core certified. Students may transfer these hours in a block but must fulfill any general education requirements at the receiving institution that have not been satisfied through the core component or through additional college courses.
Fully General Education Certified
Students will be fully general education certified by meeting the following criteria:
- Completion of a general education program of 48 credit hours, including the 33-credit-hour core transfer component and 15 additional credit hours of institution-specific general education courses, and
- Achievement of a grade-point-average of 2.0 or higher.
Students may transfer these hours in a block but must fulfill any additional general education requirements at the receiving institution that have not been satisfied through the core component or through additional college courses.
Curriculum in the KCTCS system is constantly being reviewed, improved and updated to ensure quality and relevance. Exact course requirements will be provided by a program advisor at an advising session or upon enrollment. Courses listed in this document are representative, but not binding on Gateway Community and Technical College.
