At State Forensic Tournament; Two Students Win Top Awards

, - March 03, 2009

The Gateway Community and Technical College Speech Team won second place in the community college division at the Kentucky Forensic Association State Tournament in Owensboro Feb. 20-21.

Misy Bissonnette, an Associate of Applied Science major from Grant, Ala., was named the top community college speaker in poetry interpretation. She also received the top community college pentathlon speaker award. The pentathlon award is based on a student’s combined performance in at least five speaking events. Bissonnette competed in extemporaneous speaking, poetry interpretation, impromptu speaking, radio broadcasting, and after dinner speaking.

Rosemary “Gina” Wolfe, an Associate of Science major from Bellevue, won sixth place in the open division of informative speaking and was named the top community college speaker in both informative speaking and radio broadcasting.

“Today was a bittersweet day for me,” Bissonnette said. “This was my last competition with Gateway. I have gained so much self-confidence, made wonderful friends and enhanced my speaking skills during my two years on the speech team.”

The team’s 2008-2009 season will conclude April 4 at the Gateway-hosted community college/novice tournament at the college’s Boone Campus, 500 Technology Way, near Florence. The team is coached by Michelle Deeley Wilhite. For more information about the team contact her at 859-442-4143 or michelle.deeley@kctcs.edu
