Gateway Hosts Second Annual Speech Tournament; Finishes Season with Second Place Finish
, - April 20, 2009
The Gateway Community and Technical College Speech Team recently hosted its second annual Invitational Speech Tournament at the college’s Boone Campus. Owensboro Community and Technical College placed first in the team sweepstakes category; Gateway placed second, and Ohio Northern placed third.
Five Gateway students took individual honors in the tournament. Rachel Johnson, a freshman Associate in Science major from Edgewood, placed second in public speaking. Lauren Weaver, a freshman Associate in Science major from Florence, and Theresa Brate, a freshman Associate in Science major from Walton, placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the public speaking category. Brenda Ryan, a sophomore Associate in Applied Science major from Independence, placed sixth in public speaking and sixth in impromptu speaking. Kari Becker, a sophomore Associate in Science major from Cold Spring, placed fourth in impromptu speaking.
“Our tournament is unique because it centers on the novice speaker,” said Michelle Deeley Wilhite, coach of the Gateway Speech Team. “Other tournaments in the Commonwealth are composed primarily of students from four-year universities. Many of those students have been competing for their colleges for three or four years. Our novice tournament enables new speakers to compete on a level playing field.”
