Gateway Students Selected for Statewide All-Academic Team

Melisa Bissonnette and Kinta Joseph, students at Gateway Community and Technical College in Northern Kentucky, have been selected for the Kentucky Community and Technical College System’s All-Academic Team.
Bissonnette and Joseph will graduate from Gateway May 21. As members of the All-Academic Team, they will be honored in May during the 8th annual KCTCS Student Academic Achievement Banquet next month in Lexington.
Bissonnette is a business administration major from Grant, Ala., and will receive an associate in science degree. A native of Guntersville, Ala., Bissonnette is an award-winning member of the Gateway Speech Team and the Phi Rho Pi forensic honorary. She is a member of the National Technical Honor Society and Phi Theta Kappa and regularly makes the Dean’s List.
Bissonnette is the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, the Fifth Third Bank Scholarship, and the Thank You America Scholarship. She is a founding member of the GCTC Student Government Association and served as a Student Ambassador and on the Student Choice Award committee. Her poetry earned the Voices of Gateway award. Bissonnette is a full-time planner for the defense and aerospace division of Sanmina-SCI in Huntsville, Ala. Bissonnette serves the community as a Salvation Army and United Way volunteer. Active in her church, she leads the choir, is a member of the Emmaus Community, and participated in a mission trip to a Native American reservation in South Dakota. Bissonnette is also a foster parent and a student at Troy State University in Troy, Ala., where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
Joseph, of Erlanger, is a criminal justice major and will receive an associate in arts degree. She plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree at Northern Kentucky University, beginning this summer. A native of New Orleans, Joseph relocated to Northern Kentucky after surviving Hurricane Katrina. At Gateway, Joseph was instrumental in the formation of the Multicultural Student Organization, the local chapter of the American Criminal Justice Society, and the Student Government Association. She is also a member of the Passport Club and organized the Battle of the Scales. Joseph is a member of the National Technical Honor Society and qualified for membership in Phi Theta Kappa. She received an NAACP Scholarship Award and many other scholarships. She was named SGA Senator of the Year in 2008. She is a graduate of the New Orleans Adult Education Learning Center where she received a GED. She is a member of her local School-Based Decision-Making Council and is employed by the Florence Mall in its public safety office.

Two students from each of the 16 KCTCS colleges are chosen annually for the All-Academic Team based on a rigorous selection process that focuses on academic performance and campus involvement. The 2009 KCTCS All-Academic Team Scholars are part of a national program sponsored by national honor society Phi Theta Kappa, USA Today and the American Association of Community Colleges.
